CSUCI Students Complete Landmark Consumer Sentiment Survey Focused on Ventura County

CAMARILLO, Calif. — July 21, 2025 — California State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) is proud to announce the completion of a groundbreaking consumer sentiment survey focused exclusively on Ventura County—marking a first in the region’s economic research landscape.

The survey, designed and executed by students in the Economics Department at CSUCI’s Martin V. Smith School of Business & Economics, offers a unique, data-driven snapshot of local consumer confidence, spending expectations, and economic outlook. The project was conducted under the direction of Dr. Bryan Tomlin, Chair of the Economics Department, and reflects CSUCI’s commitment to applied learning and community engagement.

Dr. Tomlin explained that the idea for the survey was the result of a collaboration with local businesses: “The survey was actually conceived of through a conversation with local business leaders who approached me with questions about the uncertainty surrounding the current economic landscape – from wildfires to tariffs to immigration raids – and how that might affect their profitability in the near and long term. Economics has a lot to say in theory about how these things will shape our economy, and empirical evidence supports that theory, but none of it is really focused on our region in particular. The solution was to create this survey specifically for Ventura County.”

Dr. Tomlin added, “This project not only provided valuable hands-on research experience for our students, but it also delivers meaningful insights for local businesses, policymakers, and residents. Our hope is that understanding how consumers feel about their personal finances and the broader economy will help inform smarter economic decisions at every level.”

The Ventura County Consumer Sentiment Survey is modeled after national indices but tailored to reflect the unique economic dynamics of the county. Questions covered a wide range of topics, including perceptions of job security, inflation, local business conditions, future purchasing plans, and behavioral responses to the recent wildfires.

Local business leaders and economic development professionals are encouraged to review the findings, which highlight emerging trends and offer a pulse on public sentiment that could influence strategic planning and policy.

This student-led project demonstrates CSUCI’s dedication to regional economic development and the powerful intersection of academic research and community impact.
